DONCASTER PUBLIC BACK CAMPAIGN FOR
NEW GREEN BELT

Countryside watchdog the Campaign to Protect Rural England – South Yorkshire received positive support at two public meetings, which the charity held last week, to call to extend the Doncaster Green Belt to provide protection for countryside to the east of the Borough

Held at the Rossington Memorial Hall and the Thorne Assembly Rooms, residents, local councillors and developers' representatives heard how they could help influence Doncaster’s future development plans to ensure valuable countryside areas are protected from development pressures.

It is vital that local people are aware that proposals to develop land around Doncaster for 1,200 new homes and up to 1,500 jobs will have a huge impact on the countryside, explains John King, Planning Officer at CPRE South Yorkshire. Growth on this scale needs to be sensitively managed and appropriate, sustainable sites selected so that valuable countryside is not unnecessarily lost. These meetings provided an ideal environment to discuss how this can be done and how Green Belt expansion can help.

Residents were invited from across the eastern half of the Borough and both meetings were well attended as residents came to voice their fears for the future of their areas and to hear how new Green Belt areas could ensure that valuable countryside land is protected.

Following the meetings, CPRE SY will be contacting all those who attended and keeping them informed of the campaign. CPRE will also be contacting Parish Councils and local interest groups to arrange further meetings to discuss development issues and the role of Green Belts.
