CPRE South Yorkshire works with volunteer project workers on initiatives that will help to sustain South Yorkshire’s natural beauty. The aim is to research ideas for future sustainable use and to try and harness South Yorkshire’s natural aspects while still maintaining a living, working countryside.

Although we are not currently working on any specific projects in South Yorkshire, our recent South Yorkshire Food Project was an excellent success.

Supported by Business Link South Yorkshire, our Local Food Project aimed to demonstrate to South Yorkshire shoppers that buying locally grown produce directly supports the countryside because the money spent is retained in the locality helping to support jobs and revitalise communities and also establish a greater link between food and the landscape in which it is produced.

Benefits

"Local food helps to develop a greater trust and support between supplier and consumer and by making choices consumers can have a direct influence on the way the farmed countryside is managed" said Gemma Grieve, Local Food Project Officer for CPRE South Yorkshire.

Buying and eating local food brings many benefits to the wider countryside including:

  • putting money back into the rural economy

  • generating demand for local business

  • reconnecting consumers with producers

  • creating a pride in the local landscape that produces high quality food

  • reducing “food miles” – the distance that food travels and so helping to reduce harmful emissions.

"From home reared beef and local honey to hand made crisps and organic vegetables, South Yorkshire is a delicious county with many innovative local food schemes", explains Gemma."It can be difficult however to find places to shop for local produce and this directory, makes it much easier to buy food from South Yorkshire producers and help support our valuable countryside."
