Loxley Valley
“I love this area very much, and I am both shocked and appalled at what has been proposed for the Loxley Valley. It is an absolute disgrace that a development of this magnitude could even be contemplated in this beautiful area”
Julian Lloyd Webber
President of the Bradfield Festival 2006
Bovis Homes Ltd are planning what will virtually amount to a new township in Sheffield’s Green Belt within the Loxley Valley. Initial plans published in July for the former Hepworth site have indicated that nearly 500 new homes will be proposed for the site.
This is a serious threat to the Loxley Valley. Although the site is already developed, it is located within sight (1km) of the Peak District National Park. The proposal is completely unsustainable, as it will create a virtual new township in the Green Belt. Where will the new residents shop? Which schools or places of work will they go to? There are already serious concerns regarding traffic generation along the Loxley Road and increased congestion in Malin Bridge.
The Loxley Valley is an important green corridor providing valuable open space for local residents. It also provides an important habitat for wildlife, bringing the countryside into the city and providing an important green link between Sheffield and the National Park, which is enjoyed by thousands of walkers.
The Loxley Valley is designated as Green Belt and therefore has strict planning controls which should prevent inappropriate development. There are sufficient brown field sites within Sheffield to accommodate the number of new homes needed, so there is no need to build new homes in the Green Belt. We believe that any development here should be to the same standards as within the National Park.
We are opposing this development in partnership with the Loxley Valley Protection Society, Loxley Valley Design Group and Bradfield Parish Council and we are campaigning to prevent the suburbanisation of the valley.
